What To Do About Citizen Spies

"It always seems like somebody's watching me, and I get no privacy..."
from the song "Somebody's Watching Me"

When people say "If you don't have anything to hide, you don't have any reason to worry", it's just one more piece of propaganda to cause you to give in to something that's wrong.  You know it in your gut, but you think you'll go along because your government told you to.

The whole true purpose of the Citizen Spy program has nothing to do with Homeland Security, it has to do with causing the people of this country to begin fearing each other, to separate us and cause us to become confused about who to trust.  In the end, that would cause us to rely on the government completely.  It would cause us to be quiet, to not participate in Democracy out of disgust and hopelessnes, and it would cause us to be afraid to speak out when we know that our government is doing things it ought not do.

So, I decided what I'd do is turn the tables on the Bush Adminsitration.  After all, why should they be entitled to such extreme privacy and secrecy, while we're subjected to invasion of privacy to the extent of criminality.  Imagine authorizing, as agents of the government, fellow citizens to make illegal searches of your home.   That's exactly what Citizen Spies do.  And, it's unconstitutional.

Here's what I'm going to do:

1) I'm going to put up a sign outside my front door.  It will say this:

Dear Possible Citizen Spy:

I don't know whether you have agreed to participate in the TIPS program or not, but I believe it is both unconstitutional and just plain bad for the American culture.   While I do not blame you personally for being dis-informed and recruited into what is a betrayal of your fellow citizens, I can not allow my disapproval of such policy to be overridden by my compassion for the situation you have been placed in.

Still, there are some rules you must adhere to in order to enter my residence, or step onto this property in the future.

a) You will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

b) If you choose not to sign the confidentiality agreement, I may send you away.

c) The alternative is that I may require you to be blindfolded and lead you to the place where  your services are required.  I will supervise your every movement every moment you are on these premises. I will video tape your every movement.

d)  If you refuse to do the services required because working under these conditions makes you uncomfortable, I will understand, and consider that my message has been sent.

In addition, I will write to your employer and inform them that I consider their willingness to participate in such programs to be un-American, and that your refusal to comply with my terms and conditions may cause them to be liable for damages resulting from the breach of contract and breach of the implied warranties of their advertising, and general descriptions of services in the contracts and fine print as agreed to upon instigation of the contract originally entered into for such services.

Such complaints will be persued in accordance with precedent established in rulings consistent with prior petitions and civil actions presented under the authority of the FTC.

e) Whatever events occur, I will log my notes about this incident in a little book, complete with your name and company name, and send it to all of my elected officials in protest of this tyrannical governmental policy.  I will write the same kind of letter and send it to my local newspapers, as well as mention you in internet chat rooms and message boards.

2) If you wish to engage with the occupants of this household, please knock on the door 3 times briskly, and then step back 20 paces and await further instructions.   Otherwise, please have the courtesy of calling me upon return to your office, so that I will at least be informed of your decision.
Sorry to put you in this position, really, but, the government has put you in this position, not me.  And I oppose this policy.  If you don't like to be treated this way, then we have something in common.  I don't like being treated this way either, yet it's exactly what you're doing by participating in this program.

Please think about how you are being used, and how much distrust and division such policies will do to our country.   And then do whatever you believe is right.
